3M™ Cubitron™ II* Gear Grinding Wheels

A new dimension of gear grinding performance

3M™ Cubitron™ II* Gear Grinding Wheels are engineered to help you achieve consistent, highquality finishes and tight geometry tolerances, part after part – while increasing the efficiency and productivity of your operations.

Increased throughput
Less wheel dressing
Dramatically lower risk of burning
Extended wheel life
Consistent grinding performance

Increased throughput
Reduce machining time by up to 50% in some applications. Faster grinding and less downtime for truing.

Less wheel dressing
3M™ Cubitron™ II* Gear Grinding Wheels are strong enough to maintain their shape and free-cutting ability for an extended time. More time between dressing cycles, faster feed rates and lower costs per part.

Dramatically lower risk of burning
Practically eliminates the risk of abrasive burning under typical grinding conditions. Despite high contact, virtually no thermal load is created between 3M™ Cubitron™ II* Gear Grinding Wheels and the workpiece, even under extreme grinding conditions.

Extended wheel life
3M™ Cubitron™ II* Gear Grinding Wheels provide up to 2 to 3 times the service life of conventional ceramic wheels.

Consistent grinding performance
Delivers high quality, in-spec finishes every time. In repeated tests and trials, these wheels generated reliable and consistent results, making the grinding process easier and more predictable.

The right grinding wheel for each application

Gear grinding requires high precision throughout the process, and it is important to use the right grinding wheel for the application. The selection of abrasive material and wheel configuration depends on the base alloy, tooth geometry and size of the production run, among other factors. 3M™ recently expanded abrasives portfolio can help you meet the growing demand for tighter dimensional tolerances and shorter production schedules, even with difficult-to-grind materials.

Abrasive materials for gear grinding
Gears are usually made of low to medium-hard alloys or quenched and tempered steel, and for economic reasons these materials are usually ground with conventional abrasives.

CBN may be useful for grinding hardened steel, with large lot sizes, or for driveshafts featuring multiple gear wheels that prevent the use of threaded grinding wheels.

Some gearbox manufacturers use electroplated CBN grinding wheels in order to reduce noise generation when paired with gears manufactured by other methods.

CBN grinding can also generate compressive, residual stress on the gear flank surface, which increases the life of the component.
