Plunge grinding is a simple form of grinding process comparable to conventional cylindrical plunge grinding. During the plunge operation the workpiece
does not make any axial movement, and the regulating wheel is dressed parallel to the grinding wheel. The workpiece is placed into the grinding gap from above. In most case the grinding wheel is in accordance with the form of the workpiece. The regulating wheel may also be dressed in accordance with the form of the workpiece in order to avoid flexing or bending of the workpiece.
In this process, the axis of the regulating wheel is inclined in relation to the axis of the grinding wheel This inclination causes the workpiece to obtain an axial feed motion that makes it pass continuously across the grinding wheel periphery. The angle of inclination, ranges between 1 and 7 degrees, depending on the required feed rate – the greater the angle of inclination, the higher the feed-rate becomes. The feed-rat is also determined by the rpm of the regulating wheel. We have the possibility how to calculate the actual feed-rate can be found in the process.
